Canada offers direct entry for FSc students, up to 3 years of post-study work, and a clear path to permanent residency. But the rules changed a lot in 2024–2025 — this guide covers the current 2026 process, not the outdated SDS one still floating around.
- SDS is closed. The Student Direct Stream ended on 8 November 2024. Everyone now applies through the standard study permit. Ignore any "SDS" instructions.
- Proof of funds rose to CAD 22,895 (single applicant, outside Quebec) from September 2025 — not the old CAD 20,635.
- PAL now required for undergraduate students (Master's/PhD at public universities are exempt in 2026).
- PGWP now needs a language test (CLB 7 for degree graduates), but no field-of-study restriction for degrees.

- FSc / HSSC accepted directly for Year-1 entry — no foundation year
- Competitive programmes want 60–70%+
- Top universities (Toronto, UBC, McGill, Waterloo): effectively 80%+ (A/A+)
- Top engineering / CS: closer to 85–90%
- Engineering requires Physics + Maths (often Chemistry); Business may require Maths/Economics
Postgraduate Requirements
- Completed 4-year Bachelor's (16 years of education) required
- A 2-year Bachelor's (14 years) is often insufficient without a bridging qualification
- Typical minimum: ~3.0/4.0 GPA or 65–70%
- Competitive programmes / top universities: ~3.3/4.0 (70%+ / first division)
- Some MBA and business programmes still require GMAT/GRE
IELTS Requirements for Canadian Universities
With SDS closed, there is no separate mandatory IELTS band for the study permit itself — you satisfy English through your university's admission requirement. A language test is now needed later for the PGWP.

U of T Lester B. Pearson Scholarship
Full Ride (4 years)Covers tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence for four years at the University of Toronto. Around 37 scholars a year worldwide. You must be nominated by your school, then apply. One of the most prestigious undergraduate awards on earth.
UBC International Major Entrance Scholarship
CAD 10,000–25,000/yrA renewable entrance scholarship (up to 3 additional years) for high-achieving international undergraduate students at UBC. UBC also runs the International Scholars Program (including full-need awards for students facing hardship).
Graduate Assistantships (TA / RA)
Tuition waiver + stipendThe most overlooked funding source. Research and teaching assistantships at Master's and PhD level — especially in STEM — often cover tuition entirely plus a living stipend. This is how most funded Pakistani graduate students study in Canada.
University Entrance & Merit Awards
CAD 3,000–20,000McGill, Waterloo, Alberta and others offer merit-based entrance scholarships to strong international applicants — many automatic on admission, some renewable. Every application should target these.
The Canada Study Permit — Step by Step (2026)
With SDS closed, all Pakistani students apply through the standard study permit stream. Here is the current, accurate process.
The Study Permit Process
Get your Letter of Acceptance (LOA)
Receive and accept an offer from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Almost all Canadian universities are DLIs — verify on your offer.
Obtain your Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)
Your university issues a PAL confirming your application counts within the province's allocation. Undergraduate students need one. Master's and Doctoral students at public universities are exempt in 2026.
Prepare your proof of funds
Show first-year tuition + CAD 22,895 living costs (outside Quebec) + travel. Funds should be seasoned for ~4 months. A GIC is optional but a clean, officer-friendly way to show funds. Large last-minute deposits trigger scrutiny.
Complete your upfront medical exam
Book with an IRCC-approved panel physician in Pakistan. Includes TB screening. Doing it upfront (before applying) speeds up processing. Cost roughly CAD 100–450 equivalent.
Submit your online application
Apply through the IRCC portal with your LOA, PAL, proof of funds, medical, statement of purpose, transcripts, and English results. Study permit fee CAD 150 + biometrics CAD 85.
Give biometrics at VFS Global
Attend a VFS Global centre in Islamabad, Karachi, or Lahore to provide your fingerprints and photograph.
Receive your approval and travel
On approval you receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction; your actual study permit is issued when you land in Canada. Carry your LOA, PAL, proof of funds, and POE letter.

Most universities require 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0). Toronto often wants 7.0 for Engineering/Business; some Waterloo programmes need 7.5. Mid-tier universities accept 6.0–6.5. Duolingo is accepted at most universities except McGill graduate programmes.
