UK Student Visa from Pakistan: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

UK student visa refusals for Pakistani students spiked to 41% in late 2025. The rules are tighter than ever — but if you know exactly what is required, the process is straightforward. This guide covers every step, every document, and every common mistake.

Important 2025–2026 update: Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) cards no longer exist. From 15 July 2025, Pakistani students approved for a UK Student visa receive an eVisa only — a digital immigration permission accessed through a UKVI online account. No card, no vignette sticker in your passport. Make sure your UKVI account is active before you fly.

Before You Begin: Get Your CAS

To apply for a UK student visa from Pakistan, you first need a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) — a 14-digit reference number generated by your university once you have accepted an unconditional offer and paid any required deposit. You enter this CAS number in your online visa application.

Check your CAS carefully before applying. Verify that your name, date of birth, passport number, course name, dates, and tuition fee amount all match your passport and offer letter exactly. Even a single character difference is a refusal ground. If there is an error, contact your university's international admissions team immediately — only the university can issue a corrected CAS.

The 8-Step Visa Process

1

Receive unconditional offer and CAS

Once your university confirms your place with no remaining conditions, they issue a CAS. Request it early — universities can issue CAS letters up to 6 months before your course start date.

2

Book and attend your TB test

Book at a UK Home Office-approved IOM or AMC clinic in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, or Mirpur as soon as possible — appointments fill up during peak season (May–August). Certificate is valid for 6 months from the test date. Cost: approximately PKR 10,000–15,000.

3

Build your 28-day bank statement

Ensure the required funds are held continuously in your account for 28 consecutive days. The statement closing date must fall within 31 days of your visa application submission. See the Financial Requirements section below.

4

Complete the online visa application on GOV.UK

Apply at gov.uk/student-visa/apply. Enter your CAS number, personal details, and financial information. Answer all questions about previous visa refusals truthfully — concealing a prior refusal is misrepresentation.

5

Pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge

Visa fee: £558. IHS: £776 per year of your course — paid upfront for the full duration (e.g., £2,328 for a 3-year degree). Both paid online at the time of application.

6

Book biometric appointment at VFS Global

UK visa appointments in Pakistan are handled exclusively by VFS Global (not BLS). After paying your fees online, you gain access to the VFS appointment calendar. Book your nearest centre. Bring all original documents, your appointment confirmation, and your passport.

7

Attend your appointment — submit documents and biometrics

Give your fingerprints and photograph at the VFS centre. Submit all supporting documents. Your passport is retained until a decision is made.

8

Receive your decision — set up your eVisa

Processing takes approximately 3 weeks. Upon approval, you receive an email to create your UKVI account and activate your eVisa. Do this immediately and link your passport before travelling.

Financial Requirements: The 28-Day Rule Explained

This is where most Pakistani students fail their visa. The rules are strict and unforgiving.

University LocationLiving Cost (9 months)What This Means
London£13,761 (£1,529 × 9)Plus your full first-year tuition fees
Outside London£10,539 (£1,171 × 9)Plus your full first-year tuition fees

The 28-day rule — exactly how it works

  • The full required amount must be in your account every single day for 28 consecutive days
  • The balance must never drop below the required total — even once
  • The bank statement closing date must be no more than 31 days old when you submit your visa application
  • Funds can be spread across multiple accounts — but the 28-day rule must be satisfied independently in each account
  • Both the student's own account and a parent's account are acceptable — but if using a parent's account, include relationship documents and a sponsor letter
Large unexplained deposits are a red flag. A sudden lump sum appearing shortly before the 28-day window suggests borrowed funds. If a large deposit occurred recently, write a source-of-funds letter explaining the origin (e.g., property sale with deeds, salary accumulation with payslips, inheritance with documents). Ideally, keep the full required amount in the account for 3 months or more.

If parents are funding: Sponsor letter requirements

The sponsor letter must state: the parent's full name, contact details, their relationship to you, the duration of their financial support, and the amount or a commitment to cover all fees and living costs. Include the parent's bank statement (28-day rule applies), proof of relationship (birth certificate or Family Registration Certificate), and a copy of the parent's CNIC. Notarisation is not officially required by UKVI but is good practice for Pakistani applicants given heightened scrutiny.

TB Test: Mandatory for Pakistani Students

A tuberculosis chest X-ray is required for all Pakistani applicants for any UK visa of more than 6 months. The test must be done at a UK Home Office-approved clinic — results from non-approved clinics are rejected.

The New eVisa System: What You Need to Know

This is the biggest change most Pakistani students are unaware of. BRP cards no longer exist. From October 2024, no new BRP cards were issued. From 15 July 2025, there are no 90-day vignette stickers in passports either. Your entire visa is now digital.

What you receive instead

After approval, you receive an email invitation to create a UKVI online account. Your eVisa (digital immigration permission) lives in this account. To prove your status to a landlord, employer, or university, you generate a share code from your account — they enter it on the GOV.UK checking service.

Before you travel

Set up your UKVI account and link your passport before your flight. Airlines verify your immigration status digitally. Arriving at the airport without an active, linked eVisa will prevent you from boarding.

Common Reasons UK Student Visas Are Refused for Pakistani Students

1. Financial evidence problems

The most common single reason. The balance dropped below the required amount even once during the 28-day window, the statement closing date was more than 31 days old, or large unexplained deposits raised red flags. Fix: maintain funds for 3+ months, provide source of funds documentation.

2. CAS mismatch

Any discrepancy between your visa application form and the CAS letter — name spelling, date of birth, tuition fee amount, course dates — causes automatic refusal. Fix: cross-check every field character by character before submitting.

3. Failure to demonstrate genuine student intent

UKVI is looking for evidence that studying is your primary purpose. Red flags include: unexplained study gaps, a course that doesn't logically follow your previous qualifications, or a vague Statement of Purpose. Fix: provide a clear, specific SOP that connects your course to concrete career goals in Pakistan or abroad.

4. Undisclosed prior visa refusals

Concealing a refusal from any country constitutes misrepresentation and can result in a multi-year ban. Always disclose. Fix: declare all refusals and explain what has changed in your application.

5. Wrong English language test

Some applicants submit IELTS General Training (not accepted for university admission) or standard IELTS Academic where IELTS Academic UKVI was required. Check with your university whether your CAS will cover the English language assessment or whether you need an independent SELT.

Applywise handles the entire UK student visa process for our students. We guide the financial requirements, check every document, coordinate with your university on CAS, and walk you through the VFS appointment — so your visa is done right the first time.

What to Do If Your Visa Is Refused

A refusal is not the end. You can reapply immediately with no mandatory waiting period. Read your refusal letter forensically — every ground must be addressed with stronger evidence in a fresh application. Include a cover letter explaining the previous refusal and what you have done to fix each issue.

If you believe the Entry Clearance Officer made an administrative error (overlooked evidence you submitted, misapplied the rules), you can request an Administrative Review within 28 calendar days of the refusal. Cost: £154. Note: Administrative Review does not allow new evidence — it reviews the original decision only.

Always disclose the prior refusal on your new application. Concealing it is grounds for a multi-year ban.
