What Is the Chevening Scholarship?
Chevening is a fully funded, one-year Master's degree scholarship at any eligible UK university, awarded to outstanding professionals who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to returning to their home country to make a positive impact. It has been running since 1983 and is backed directly by the British Government through the FCDO and partner organisations worldwide.

What Does Chevening Cover?
Chevening is truly fully funded. Here is exactly what the scholarship pays for:

Chevening Eligibility for Pakistani Students
You must satisfy all of the following criteria to be eligible:

The Chevening Application Timeline (2026–27 Cycle)
The online application portal opens at chevening.org/apply. Start immediately — do not wait until October. All four essays require multiple drafts. You also need to identify and apply to at least three eligible UK universities through the Chevening portal.
The portal closes hard at this time. Late submissions are not accepted for any reason. Submit at least 48 hours early to allow for technical issues. You will need: CV, two references, personal statement, the four essays, and your university choices entered in the system.
The British High Commission in Islamabad reviews all Pakistani applications. Shortlisted candidates receive an email invitation to interview. You will not receive feedback if you are not shortlisted at this stage.
Interviews take place in person at the British High Commission, Islamabad. They are typically 20–30 minutes with a panel of two or three interviewers. Expect to be challenged on your essays — especially your leadership narrative and your career plan. You cannot do the interview online or at a different location.
Successful candidates are notified. You then have until 8 July 2027 to submit at least one unconditional offer from an eligible UK university. Chevening will not confirm your award without this offer.
Chevening arranges visa support. You attend a pre-departure briefing in Pakistan organised by the British High Commission. Studies begin in September or October 2027 depending on your university.
The Four Chevening Essays: What Assessors Are Looking For
Each essay has a strict 500-word limit. Going over — even by one word — flags your application as non-compliant. The essays collectively need to paint one coherent picture: a mid-career professional with a track record of leading and influencing others, a clear sense of where they are going, and a specific reason why a UK Master's degree now is the catalytic step to get there.
Essay 1: Leadership and Influence
Describe a specific situation where you demonstrated leadership and had a measurable positive impact. This is not about your job title — it is about the moment you changed the direction of something or moved people to act. Use the STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Be quantitative where possible: "increased team output by 30%," "trained 12 staff members," "secured PKR 4 million in additional funding."
The mistake most Pakistani applicants make here: writing about a group achievement and using "we" throughout. Assessors want to see your specific contribution, your decision, your risk. Use "I" deliberately and clearly.
Essay 2: Networking
Explain how you have built a professional network and used it to achieve something meaningful. Then describe how studying in the UK and joining the Chevening alumni network (60,000+ members) will extend your reach and advance your goals. Be specific about which people, organisations, or sectors you want to connect with in the UK — and why those connections matter for Pakistan.
Essay 3: Studying in the UK
This essay must answer two questions: why this specific course, and why the UK specifically (not just any country)? Name the universities you are applying to and explain their relevance. Reference specific modules, faculty, research centres, or clinics. Generic statements ("the UK has world-class universities") score poorly. The assessor wants to see that you have done serious academic research.
Essay 4: Career Plan
Describe your career trajectory for the next 10 years with specificity. What role do you want to be in at year 3, year 5, year 10? What will you have built, changed, or led? How does the Master's you are applying for connect the dots between where you are now and where you are going? And critically — how does returning to Pakistan fit into this plan? The Selection Process: From Application to Interview
Chevening selection in Pakistan has two gates: the written application review (shortlisting) and the interview panel at the British High Commission in Islamabad.
Shortlisting is done entirely on your written application — essays, CV, references, and your choice of course and universities. Shortlisters are looking for evidence of leadership, a credible career plan, and strong communication. A generic, vague application that could have been written by anyone will not pass.
The interview is an assessment of you as a person, not a test of your knowledge. Interviewers will probe your essays: "You said you led this project — what was the hardest decision you made?"
