Australian GS Assessment — Complete Document Checklist for Pakistani Students

The Genuine Student (GS) requirement is the most scrutinised part of the Australian Student Visa application for Pakistani students. This guide covers every document you need — basic documents, income proof, financial evidence, and what immigration officers specifically look for from Pakistani applicants.

What Is the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement?

From March 2024, the Department of Home Affairs replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) test with the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. The GS assessment is how immigration officers decide whether your primary purpose in coming to Australia is genuinely to study.

For Pakistani students, the GS assessment has two components: a written statement (sometimes called a GS Statement or Study Plan) and a document file supporting that statement. This guide focuses on the document file — what every Pakistani applicant must prepare, what each document must contain, and what red flags to avoid.

Why Pakistani students get refused: The most common GS-related refusal reasons from Pakistan are inconsistent financial evidence (documents that don't support each other), unexplained income sources, cash-heavy bank statements, and a mismatch between declared assets and the actual lifestyle or tax filing history of the sponsor family. This guide will help you avoid all of these.

Section A Basic Documents

Every applicant must submit the following as the foundation of their GS file. These must be current, legible, complete, and in English or accompanied by certified English translations.

  • Complete Passport Scan — all pages, including blank pages, must be scanned. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended course end date. If you have previous passports, include those too. ⚠ Partial scans or cut-off pages are a common reason for document rejection.
  • ID Card (CNIC) of Applicant — with Certified English Translation — both front and back of the CNIC. The English translation must be done by a certified translator, not self-prepared. Must be current and not expired.
  • ID Card (CNIC) of Sponsor(s) — with Certified English Translation — CNIC of every financial sponsor (typically father or both parents). Include both front and back. Separate translations for each sponsor. If the sponsor is a business owner, their business registration number (NTN) is also useful to include.
  • Family Registration Certificate (FRC) — issued by NADRA. Must be current (within 6 months). Proves your relationship to sponsors. Include an English translation. Do not substitute with a marriage certificate or birth certificate alone — the FRC is specifically required.
  • Birth Certificate from Union Council — the official birth registration document from the local Union Council, not the hospital birth certificate. Include a certified English translation. Must show your parents' names and match the FRC.
  • Police Character Clearance Certificate — obtained from the local police station or via the Passport Office in Pakistan. Must be recent (within 3–6 months of the visa application date). Include a certified English translation. Some immigration officers also accept a clearance from NADRA (Criminal Record Check). Get both if possible.
  • Complete Academic Documents used for academic condition — all transcripts, certificates, and attestations used to secure your university offer. Must include FSc/Matric/A-Level results, or Bachelor's degree and transcripts for postgraduate applicants. All documents must be attested by HEC (for degree-level) or the relevant Board (for FSc/Matric). Unattested documents are not accepted. Attestation takes time — start this process early.
  • English Proficiency Certificate (IELTS) — the official Test Report Form (TRF) from IELTS. Must meet both university admission and visa requirements. Ensure it is still within the 2-year validity window at the time of your visa application. PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are also accepted. Duolingo is not accepted for the Australian Student Visa.
  • Affidavit of Sponsorship — a notarised legal declaration from your financial sponsor (parent or guardian) confirming they will cover all your tuition fees and living expenses in Australia for the full course duration. Must be signed before an oath commissioner or notary public, stamped, and include full names, addresses, and CNICs of both the sponsor and the student. This is a legal document — a typed letter without notarisation is not sufficient.

Section B Proof of Income

Income proof demonstrates that your sponsor has a regular, sustainable source of funds — not just a one-time balance in the bank. Immigration officers look at income to assess whether the family can realistically support a student abroad over the full course duration.

Income threshold for Pakistani sponsors: A monthly income of PKR 5–7 lacs is the typical benchmark expected by immigration officers. This should be consistent across statements — not a one-month spike. No cash transactions — cash deposits and withdrawals are red flags. All income should be traceable to a documented source.
  • 3-Month Running Bank Statement with Visible Monthly Income — must be signed and stamped by the bank. "Running" means showing regular monthly credits (salary, rental income, business transfers) — not a lump-sum deposit. The statement must clearly show monthly income flowing in. In some cases, immigration officers request 6 months of statements — prepare both to be safe.
  • Monthly Income: PKR 5–7 Lacs minimum — cash transactions are viewed negatively. All income must be electronic/cheque deposits with a clear source. Irregular or sporadic income creates scrutiny. If the sponsor has multiple income sources (salary + rent + business), all must be shown and evidenced separately.
  • Documents of Source(s) of Income — see the income source table below for what is accepted per income type. Each income source requires its own supporting document — not just the bank statement.
  • Account Maintenance Certificate — issued by the bank confirming the account has been active and maintained for at least 6 months. This proves the account is established and not opened recently just for the visa. Request this directly from your bank branch — it takes 1–3 working days.
  • Last 2 Years Tax Returns — filed with the FBR (Federal Board of Revenue), showing declared income and assets worth PKR 5–6 crore in total wealth. Tax returns must be submitted (not just filed) and include an asset declaration. Unfiled or informal tax records are not accepted. If the sponsor has not been filing taxes, this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed before applying.

Income Source Documentation — What to Prepare

Salaried Employment
Salary slips (last 3 months), Employment Contract, Letter from employer confirming position, salary, and tenure
Business Owner
Business registration certificate (SECP or local registration), NTN certificate, business bank statements showing turnover, business tax returns
Rental Income
Registered tenancy agreement / rent deed, property ownership documents (Fard, Registry, Allotment Letter), rent receipts or bank transfer records
Agricultural Income
Fard Jamabandi (land records from Patwari), agricultural tax returns, income from crop sales with receipts or bank deposits
Pension / Retirement
Pension payment certificate from employing organisation, bank statements showing pension deposits, pension book if applicable
Investment Returns
TDR / profit certificates from bank, savings account profit statements, mutual fund statements, dividend certificates

Section C Proof of Funds

Proof of funds demonstrates that the money needed for your first year in Australia is actually available — not just that the sponsor earns enough to cover it over time. This is separate from income proof.

Funds calculation for Australian Student Visa from Pakistan:
ComponentAmountNotes
First Year Tuition FeeAs stated on your CoEe.g. AUD 40,000 for most Master's programmes
Living Costs (12 months)AUD 29,710Official DIBP requirement per year
TravelAUD 3,000Return airfare allowance
Typical Total (Master's)~AUD 72,710≈ PKR 14.5 million (~1.45 crore) at ~PKR 192/AUD. Note: the bank statement funds requirement is calculated on your first year's fee only, plus living and travel costs.
  • 3 Months Maintained Bank Statement — the same bank statement used for income proof, showing the required funds have been consistently maintained for at least 3 months. In some cases, only 1 month of maintained funds is required — this is when the sponsor has strong additional financial evidence (properties, TDRs, tax returns showing high assets). Do not rely on 1 month if other financial evidence is limited. The balance must not have dipped significantly below the required amount during the 3-month window.
  • Documents of Source of Funds — if the funds were accumulated from a specific source (sale of property, liquidation of TDR, matured investment), provide documentary evidence of that source alongside the bank statement. A sudden large deposit without explanation is a red flag. Property sale → include sale deed and buyer's payment receipt. TDR matured → include TDR certificate and encashment receipt.

Section D Additional Financial Documents

These documents strengthen your overall financial profile. They are not always mandatory — but they significantly improve the credibility of your application by showing that the sponsor family's wealth goes beyond a single bank balance.

  • Property Ownership Documents — Fard (from Revenue Department), Registry/Inteqal, Allotment Letter, or Sale Deed for any property owned by the sponsor. Must include a certified English translation. Plots, houses, commercial property, and agricultural land all count. The more documented assets, the stronger the financial profile.
  • Market Valuation Certificate — issued by an approved property valuator confirming the current market value of each property. Must be from a licensed/registered valuer. This converts the property holding into a monetary value that immigration officers can assess. Without a valuation, the property's worth is unknown to the officer.
  • TDR / Term Deposit Certificates — Term Deposit Receipts from any bank, showing the amount, tenure, and maturity date. These demonstrate locked-in savings that reinforce the family's overall financial stability. Include the original TDR certificate and the most recent profit statement or interest credit.
  • Other Investment Documents — Savings Certificates (National Savings, Prize Bonds), Mutual Fund statements, DSC (Defence Savings Certificates), stockbroker account statements. Include current valuations and account statements. Include a statement or certificate for each investment type separately — do not lump them together.

Common Mistakes That Get Pakistani Applications Refused

1. Cash transactions in the bank statement. Large or frequent cash deposits are a red flag indicating funds may be borrowed or informal. All income and transfers should be electronic or cheque-based. If your statement shows regular ATM withdrawals but no salary credits, this raises questions about the actual source of funds.
2. Recently opened accounts with no history. Accounts opened in the months before the visa application — especially with a large one-time deposit — are viewed as created specifically for the visa and not representing genuine financial standing. The Account Maintenance Certificate proving 6+ months of account history is critical.
3. Tax returns that don't match bank statements. If the bank statement shows PKR 7 lacs/month in income but the tax return declares PKR 1 lac/month, this inconsistency is a serious credibility issue. Both documents must tell a coherent story.
4. Property documents without a market valuation. Listing properties without a market valuation certificate means the immigration officer cannot assess their worth. Always include a valuation from a licensed valuator.
5. Weak or generic GS Statement. The GS Statement must be personalised and specific to your situation — why you chose this university, this course, why Australia, and how the qualification connects to your career plan in Pakistan. A generic, template-based statement is detected immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Genuine Student (GS) requirement?

Introduced March 2024 (replacing the old GTE test), GS requires Pakistani applicants to demonstrate their primary purpose is genuine study. The assessment covers your written GS statement and your supporting document file — financial evidence, income proof, property documents, and basic identity documents.

How much monthly income does a sponsor need?

PKR 5–7 lacs per month, visible as regular electronic credits in the bank statement with no cash transactions. The income must come from documented sources — salary, business income, rental income, investments — not informal sources.

How much should be in the bank account?

First Year Tuition + AUD 29,710 (living costs) + AUD 3,000 (travel). For a Master's at AUD 40,000/year this is approximately AUD 72,710 total. Maintained for 3 months (or 1 month if other assets are very strong). Account must be at least 6 months old.

Are tax returns required?

Yes. Last 2 years of FBR tax returns with income and assets declared worth PKR 5–6 crore. The tax returns and bank statements must be consistent — if the bank shows high income but the tax return declares little, this inconsistency leads to refusal.

What is an Affidavit of Sponsorship?

A notarised legal declaration from the financial sponsor (parent/guardian) committing to cover all fees and living costs in Australia for the full course duration. Must be signed before an oath commissioner, stamped, and include full names, addresses, and CNICs of both the sponsor and the student.
